Thirty-year old Kenza Drider (pictured above) is running for President of France.
In her campaign pictures, she is breaking French law by wearing a veil/niqab.
She says it’s a symbol of “boldness” and “freedom” for her to be flouting the law this way. And she’s ready to go to jail for her civil disobedience. She asks, “Are they going to put a woman in prison because of a scrap of material? It’s ridiculous and makes the country I love look stupid.”
The current French president says that the veil is a symbol of “stigma” and “social, economic, and political discrimination.”
Is it possible to wear one’s own stigma as a badge of freedom?
I don’t know the answer. But this is a great story!
